Can't you do fun Alliance stuff at blizzcon?

LOCKED, so archived here for further discussion:

After these couple days of forum posts I've seen a common posts by people and a few things from blue posters as well. I really think they could have edited down the video to not include the more objectionable stuff, but I don't want this thread to be about that. It's just a sort of thinking exercise: can't a company as successful and huge as Blizzard manage to get a cool alliance song made or something? I'm tempted to think it's more that they don't try and further that they enjoy things being a hordefest to a point.

The main thing Bashiok said is that "Samwise loves orcs"; but before that isn't he an employee and entertainer? It's kind of ridiculous to have Bashiok explain the aftershow with "well samwise likes horde better so it can't be helped" then I guess the Blizzcon Organizers dramatically threw their hands up in the air. I don't get this ... isn't this guy an adult and a professional? Tell him to write an Alliance song. Work isn't supposed to be fun all the time!

The whole "it's just a game" angle. I mean despite the fact that it's completely fallacious and that people are free to get as invested in whatever they want without some idiot on a forum trying to make them feel bad for caring about something. If it's just a game do things need to be so ... unabashedly about the horde? I mean you got this guy doing a special voice to talk to the horde people, you got a guy coming out with a horde tattoo, you got them both singing a song about how awesome the horde is. I mean didn't they get the memo that it's just a game!?

The idea that this point of contention is silly. Well that's just silly. I mean you guys are a business and running an event, if people have complaints it's completely valid. It's just kind of funny to have a guy who we're paying to tell us what we're allowed to get excited about and what we're not allowed to get excited about. Maybe he'd like to come over and make my posts for me, since he knows so exactly what I should say :P

Anyway that's it I'm just curious why Blizzard can't hire some midget rock band and dress them up like Ironforge Guards, or maybe tell people to tone it down on stage. Is it really so out of the organizers control or is it further the INTENT of organizers for the event to come off this way?

Hi Blizzard - Legal Trouble pt.2

I'm working late for you!

Link to first (capped) thread - http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3424465891#1

I'm continuing this thread so I can respond after being away from my computer for several hours. In the last thread, one of the responses was "gay people need to die", which only fuels the fire.

Many of you keep saying this, so let me clear something up since you're either not quite getting it or don't want to.

Being "thin skinned" has nothing to do with it. My concern is for those, mostly young homosexual teens, who have had to hear stuff like this their entire lives so they turn to WoW for a refuge. And guess what? They hear it here, too! And the gravy? Blizzard ENDORSES it on a big screen at a huge event like Blizzcon.

It has nothing to do with being thin skinned. It has everything to do with these stupid, moronic "jokes" causing VERY serious real like consequences to people who aren't quite as "strong" as you are.

Many have pointed out that it's "just a video game" as well. I hate to break this to you, but once you bring up REAL LIFE slurs directed at REAL LIFE people, it's no longer just a video game. It's not like anyone is offended someone called their Orc Warrior fat. People are offended because two real life groups of people, one historically bullied into suicide, were targeted to be the butt of a tasteless and tacky joke that could have very real legal repercussions if something were to happen.

There is nothing funny about making an entire group of REAL LIFE PEOPLE feel like they are worthless. If you find that funny, there's something wrong with you, not us.

EDIT:

To anyone new to these threads, you'd have to read the other one to understand that I'm not threatening to sue Blizzard. In the other thread I pointed out by endorsing the behavior it could possibly lead to legal action if something were to happen.

I'm not suing anyone. I'm just passionately stating how I feel about what's going on. You know, freedom of speech (seems to be the line the hate mongers like to use)? ;-)

Blizzcon Video Incident - Why It Matters p2

Another quick archive to kalganism, word for word as of the time of this writing.

From http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3424796168?page=1

So the old thread seems to have capped itself while I was asleep. So I am going to get a second part started. Some good discussion, in between the trolls and rage. Let's keep it civil, constructive and calm if we can.

The OP:

So, from several threads on various forums, I think that anyone who wasn't there knows the score pretty much.

Basically, Samwise of the famous band which plays at Blizzcon (which is not only vocally pro Horde but also severely anti Alliance) played a video in which a celebrity (introduced as an 'unofficial spokesman') went on a rant in which he called Alliance players whiny and emo, called them a number of homophobic slurs and said that they should die IRL - I don't want to repost the exact stuff here...but it was utterly insane.

Yes - you heard me. A senior Blizzard representitive endorsed a video saying that the players of a faction should die.

Sure, as Bashiok said it was framed as a 'joke' (he actually said he found it personally funny). And as Zarhym said, a lot of people are being silly about this.

But...really?

There have been many threads made on these forums and others about the treatment of Alliance players at Blizzcon (and to a lesser extent, in general). We've had individuals booed and jeered at publically, simply for being alliance. There have been reports of people getting insulted, taunted, spat at and even physically assaulted for wearing an Alliance shirt. When does it stop being a joke?

In fact, this year I recall more than one thread basically telling Alliance players to go to Blizzcon at risk of not enjoying it, being alienated or ridiculed at best. I don't think I've ever seen a Horde player subjected to anything like this.

We are encouraged to invest ourselves in our characters - and by extension, in our faction. And it gets hard to enjoy it when faction pride becomes anti-faction hatred, especially when it is expressed/endorsed by a Blizzard employee.

Fact is - when you have this kind of stuff going on, it stops just being a game. Take a look at football (soccer, if you live stateside) and how serious some of the rivalries in a game can get when allowed to get out of control.

So - what do you think? Was Samwise out of line? If so - how can the situation be repaired?

Let's keep this civil if we can.

Edited: For clarity and to avoid being inflammatory.

EDIT 2 - some good responses from both sides of the table...and a lot of people being obnoxious. Let's keep this clean and civil if possible. And please, please keep "Free Speech" as far away from this issue as you can.

EDIT 3 - A lot of people seem to be justifying things with "Oh, the guy plays Death Metal". The issue isn't as much what was said, it was that it was basically endorsed by Samwise and how this kind of attitude is both unprofessional and unconducive to any faction pride the Alliance are trying to build.

EDIT 4 - I was not aware that Samwise also came up with a lot of the art for Alliance. I wonder if I can blame female worgen and male humans on him too :)

EDIT 5 - If possible, can people suggest solutions, both to the damage this has potentially done to any efforts to 'build alliance spirit' and the Blizzard rep endorsement of the video? Will an apology solve it?

EDIT 6 - Off to bed for now, thanks to those of you (on either side of the issue) that have made an effort to be constructive. Other people here...depress me. I am wondering if it's time for a 3rd faction...

Basically, in summary:

- I am not an Alliance player or Horde player. I have raided on both and have toons on both. I enjoy the game.

- However, Alliance players have felt put upon for a while now and Blizzard have even actually admitted that they have been too Horde biased recently and that Alliance spirit is in need of repair.

- Blizzcon is well known as being a severe example of this, with Blizzard reps being almost unanimously Horde favoured.

- Blizzcon is also well known for people's sometimes severe attitude to Alliance players. Many threads have been made about Alliance players feeling uncomfortable - at even threatened.

- There have been many reports of disgusting behaviour by Horde players towards Alliance players IRL at Blizzcon. From people being booed and jeered at in crowds, to kids getting shoved around or spat at, to people actually getting beaten up for wearing Alliance shirts.

- This year the closing concert involved a video endorsed by Samwise, one of the Blizzard higher ups who is almost militiristically pro-Horde (joking or otherwise). The video was of an old interview with a semi-famous Metal singer.

- Said singer went on an expletive and slur laden rant against the Alliance, and the people that play them. Whether he went as far as advocating violence is debateable, but it could definately have been interpreted this way.

- Blizzard has stated that it was intended as a joke and that while they are sorry that people were offended, that people are silly for being offended by it.

- There have already been two reports of actual violence stemming out of this. One involves an incident where someone's wife was mauled after the concert. EDIT: Here http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3424466214#new-post

- I am all for Faction Pride. I don't like faction hate - when it begins to actually extend to the people who play said faction. I especially don't like it when this viewpoint is promoted and endoresed by an actual Blizzard employee.

Woman ATTACKED at Blizzcon

I am making a massive archive attempt here since Blizzard is actively supporting this kind of action by deleting posts.

Edit: Appreciate the kind thoughts, my wife is fine now, we aren't rushing to the hospital, just to make sure things are ok at a doctor. I seem to have flamed a fire of trolls who troll other trolls so I will edit this post. Kids need to take responsibility for their own actions and can't blame a rock singer BUT I feel Blizzard needs to address the bad attitude in the community on the behalf of some factions*

I originally planned to contact Blizzard privately to let them know what I am about to say but seeing Bashiok support the actions of those who led to this event I'm going to share with everyone because quite frankly I feel they won't even care.

So my wife and I flew to America for a holiday, but mostly to attend Blizzcon for the first time (we've been playing since '09) and overall had a good time; it was clear that alot of work had gone into this event. It will however be our last.

We're quite into the game, my wife especially loves her night elfs. I won't advertise the site but she ordered a shirt with a moonglade background and a night elf on it to wear to Blizzcon.

Leaving the event 2 young guys probably in their early 20s came up behind us and pulled on my wife's lanyard seemingly trying to break it off and shouted 'alliance b****' at her. It did not break lose and instead my wifes' head and neck were jolted downward. They took off running and I knew there was no way I could catch them. I wanted to go to a police station but neither of us were familiar with the area or America for that matter so she just wanted to go back to the hotel to rest her neck.

We put ice on it and had her lay down and not move it but she complained about headaches the whole next day and her neck was very stiff. It is better today but she will see our doctor as soon as we return home.

I didn't let her see me but I cried a little that night. I'm a big guy, I can handle myself, but my wife is the sweestest most innocent person I know, wouldn't hurt a fly and to see her be attacked like that over what faction in a game she loves was just too much.

As you can imagine I was furious at first, upset then furious and whilst I've calmed down a little I very much intend to let people know what happened.

Now whos fault is it? I appreciate the support but feel that the community has the wrong idea. Blizzard did not cause this to happen, it was entirely the actions of two kids BUT I feel that blatant alliance bashing creates ill-will in the community and this should stop

I didn't catch his name at the time but now know him to be 'samwise'. First he alienated alliance then directed our attention to a screen on stage where I saw a man launch into a hateful diatribe aimed at the alliance. His exact words now that I have found video footage were

'f*** the alliance, f***ing die you f***ing emo c***suckers'

I could tell me wife was uncomfortable in the audience and there were numerous people around us shouting 'f*** the alliance' although it appears to have either been editted out or not caught by the recorders of the video. When you have some fairly large guys in a dark environment, close to you shouting such stupid things and a maniac on screen on stage going off about the alliance, to be a small woman with a night elf shirt must be quite unsettling.

Then 'samwise' identified the man on screen as 'the unofficial ambassador to the mighty horde'. At the end of the rather poor performance, I believe it was this samwise again said 'alliance suck'. For a company who has a sticky on their forum against real life threats, I hardly see how showing a video calling those who play alliance 'emo c***suckers' and wanting us to 'f***ing die' is approrpriate. Can you imagine how fast I'd be banned if I said the same thing on here?

This anti-alliance sentiment is nothing new sure you're alienating a large % of your player base but if you don't care, I don't care and I haven't until the last few days when it had real life consequences. Then I see Bashiok jump to the defense of this shameful display by repeating the claim that it is 'just a game'. A spit in the face of anyone concerned and basically a 'umad?'. We all know that punks, after spouting abuse that they mean, say 'it's just a game' to disarm any retaliation.

Have fun with the game, spark a bit of rivalry between the factions but don't whip the crowd into a 'f*** the alliance' frenzy while asking that we die and calling us c***suckers. That was shameful. Samwise should be ashamed, and so should all those who organised that disgusting display. So too should those from Blizzard who defend it. I would appreciate an apology.

To my wife, what happened can't be taken away by your retort that 'it's just a game'.

Blizzard, you cannot silence me.

I have been given a ban from the WoW forums as a direct result of me standing up against the issue of bullying at Blizzcon. This is ridiculous.

I have cancelled my account and will not be coming back to the game. This is the final straw in a long line of continued attacks and issues with Blizzard entertainment over the consistent, chronic usage of gay slurs in game, on the forums, and now by Blizzard itself.

Blizzard tolerates cyber-bullying. Never forget this.

I will not urge protests like Swifty did. I will simply leave, knowing that I am dealing with a company that will actively silence and marginalize someone who takes up the issue of cyber-bullying that Blizzard just absolutely refuses to do anything about.

Today in PvP

I have to wonder anymore why slows are about the only thing that isn't on any kind of Diminishing Return state. I start into something and see Mr. Arcane Mage cast Slow. All right that's fine, I was on my healer and dispelled without even thinking. A second one came up for the same duration; again no problem. Third one happened and now this is starting to get really annoying.

Now I think to myself that after the third one, I should not receive another slow for fifteen seconds. A fourth slow now appears on me well before the 15 seconds of immunity stops. Another time, it was against a Frost Mage--same story different spell.

Now on to what we don't want or need--Mages as free kills. This isn't what we want. There is no point in making an entire class something that can be mauled with no effort whatsoever. So please don't think of this as a way of destroying Mages.

Rather, what we need is a way to work out all of these slows (including my Priest's Mind Flay). Other spells that accomplish the same goal (getting them off of your back) are already under the Diminishing Returns system. Slows are not on this system for some great unknown reason and it should be changed.

The other solution, which isn't good, is to give all slows some kind of cooldown so that it is impossible to keep slowing the same target. Trust me, you don't want this one.

Today on the Molten Front...

It's Ember Pool day on Molten Front dailies (failies, really, but we'll talk about that another time). This means Ember Pool NINJAS strike, doing no work and reaping 100% of the benefits while I work solo on Emberspit Scorpions.

Now on a PvP server and they are of the opposite faction, there is a solution which is to kill that damn idiot and camp the corpse for three hours. If you want to say there is a PvP solution to this issue, there is only that for two out of eight:

1. PvP server and opposite faction means you have a solution.

2. PvP server and same faction means you do not have a solution.

3. PvE server and opposite faction means you do not have a solution unless they were stupid enough to be flagged (they aren't).

4. PvE server and same faction means you do not have a solution.

5. RP server and opposite faction falls under the same issue as PvE.

6. RP server and same faction falls under the same issue as PvE.

7. RPPvP servers and opposite faction means you have a solution.

8. RPPvP server and same faction means you do not have a solution.

There you have it. Two out of eight situations have a solution. The rest do not. Messaging the offender doesn't help because the best you can hope for is they turn into raging chat beasts and you can report them. That's really the only solution--goad them into attacking so you can report them and get them not-banned.

I say we go and crash five servers with yells, trade, and emote spamming. The Swifty debacle proves that Blizzard will cave in when this is done. Maybe then such a thing will be brought into the light.

The History of Fear

This will be updated several times as all of the links are worked out. Please be patient.

There are things that will break Fear.

Equipment

* Faction Insignia — All classes can break Fear (and most other crowd control) once using Insignia of the Alliance or Insignia of the Horde.

* Glimmering Mithril Insignia — Blacksmith Trinket grants 30 seconds of fear immunity up to level 60. This is on a 20 minute cooldown, so use it wisely.

(greater list below)

Racial Traits or Class Abilities

* Forsaken — Forsaken has a racial trait Will of the Forsaken (WotF) which breaks fear.

* Stormwind Humans — Humans have a racial trait Every Man for Himself (EMfH) which breaks fear.

* Blood Elves — Blood Elves may stop a fear if it isn’t instant cast via Arcane Torrent.

* Tauren — Tauren may stop a fear if it isn’t instant cast via War Stomp.

* Night Elves — Night Elves may stop a non-instant cast fear with Shadowmeld, which removes them from combat.

* Death Knight — Death Knights can become immune to fear by using Anti-Magic Shell. Death Knights may also become immune to Fear by speccing into Lichborne in the Frost Tree. Both of these need to be done before the Fear is cast. The Ghoul stun (if Unholy), Strangulate, or Death Grip may stop a non-instant cast Fear. Ghouls are immune to Fear.

* Hunter — Beast Mastery spec'd pets may become immune to fear with Bestial Wrath (must be done before fear is cast). They may also stop a non-instant cast fear with Silencing Shot or Intimidation.

* Mage — Mages may use Ice Block to break fear once and stop a non-instant fear with Counterspell.

* Paladin — Paladins may use Divine Shield to break fear once. They can stop a non-instant cast fear with Hammer of Justice and Repentance. Protection Paladins can use Avenger's Shield to silence the Warlock and prevent a Fear. Paladins can use Rebuke to prevent a non-instant cast Fear.

* Priest — Priests can use Fear Ward, which absorbs one 'charge' of Fear. Priests can also stop a non-instant fear with Silence, Psychic Horror, or with Psychic Scream.

* Rogue — Rogues can gain immunity from fear by using Cloak of Shadows (CloS). This must be done before Fear is cast. Rogues can Kick or stun to stop a non-instant Fear.

* Shaman — Shamans may use Tremor Totem which can dispel fear or use Grounding Totem which can absorb fear. The totems must be laid before Fear is cast. Wind Shear can stop a non-instant cast Fear.

* Warlock — Warlocks with the Imp may use Singe Magic to dispel fear on themselves. They can also use the Felhunter's Spell Lock, a Felguard's Axe Toss, the Warlock's Deathcoil, or an instant Howl of Terror (if Affliction) to stop a non-instant cast Fear.

* Warrior — Warriors can break fear with Berserker Rage. They can also Pummel or Shield Bash to stop a non-instant cast Fear or use Spell Reflect. Arms Warriors may become immune to Fear by using Bladestorm.

*Druid — Skull Bash or Solar Beam will stop a non-instant cast Fear.

Other Notes

* Holy or Discipline Priests may dispel fear on their teammates. Restoration Druids and Shaman can dispel fear from their teammates. Paladins may spec into Holy and dispel fear from their teammates.

* A high shadow resistance can also stop fear, or cause it to break early.

* Taking damage greatly increases the chance fear would break early.

* As of Patch 2.2, all crowd control effects (with the exception of Sap) have a chance each second to break earlier. The chance increases with resistances and the level difference between the target and the caster.

*Fear can only be applied to one target at a time. Howl of Terror/Psychic Scream can be applied to up to five targets at a time but will only last for eight seconds. Those two area of effect abilities also come with a cool down on each spell to prevent it from being used again and again.

Diminishing returns:

- Fear and seduce both count toward diminishing returns. We get a maximum of three total. In PvP, the maximum time fear/seduce can last is as follows:

First fear/seduce can last up to 8 seconds.

Second fear/seduce can last up to 4 seconds.

Third fear/seduce can last up to 2 seconds.

- After one seduce, this leaves a possible combination of two fears, one fear and a seduce or two more seduces.

- Fear is a 1.7 second cast without interrupts. With melee interrupts, it can take upwards of 2 seconds to get off, if we get it off at all due to true interrupts and spell lockouts. Seduce is a 1.7 second cast and is channeled. If the succubus gets hit, seduce stops.

- fear and seduce can both be resisted and this counts towards diminishing returns. Deathcoil can be resisted as well.

Fear is also the Most Nerfed single ability or spell:

Patch 1.2 12/18/04

Fear: Players now have an increasing chance to break free of the effect, such that it is unlikely the effect will last more than 15 seconds. (nerf)

Patch 1.31 3/22/05

Fear - Mana cost changed to a percentage of base, which results in an increase in cost. (nerf)

Patch 1.41 5/5/05

Seduction (Succubus) - Is now considered a Fear effect for purposes of diminishing returns. (nerf)

Patch 1.50 6/7/05

Warriors: Deathwish - Is now usable while under a Fear effect, and will also remove an existing Fear effect. (nerf)

Patch 1.70 9/22/05

Fear will now cause creatures to flee immediately, even if they are already moving. (PvE fix)

Fixed a bug where Fear and Curse of Recklessness, when used together, would prevent targets from casting spells. (PvE bug fix)

Druids: Druids should now be able to shapeshift back into caster form while Feared. (nerf)

Patch 1.80 10/10/05

Pets no longer break off attacks when their target is affected by Warlock Fear. (not much of a change really, but it can aid fear in breaking sooner).

Death Coil - Cooldown reduced, mana cost increased, and now causes a short Fear effect that is not diminished. (DC buff - 3 second horror effect, 2 minute cooldown)

Patch 1.10 3/28/06

Death Coil - The horrify component no longer affects undead creatures (they've seen it all before. (PvE nerf)

Patch 1.11 6/19/06

Fear: The calculations to determine if Fear effects should break due to receiving damage have been changed. The old calculation used the base damage of the ability. The new calculation uses the final amount of damage dealt, after all modifiers. In addition, the chance for a damage over time spell to break Fear is now significantly lower. Note that Fear continues to be roughly three times as likely to break on player targets as on non-player targets. (nerf)

Patch 1.12 8/22/06

Howl of Terror: This spell now uses the same resistance checks as the Warlock spell Fear. (nerf)

Patch 2.1

Chance to break crowd control from damage: The increased chance for a spell to break from taking a critical strike has been removed. Instead, all targets over level 60 have a slightly larger chance to break out of crowd-controlling effects when they take damage. (Affliction (and Demo) nerf)

- In addition, fear and seduce both have "heartbeat" resists and can break at any time, whether damage has been applied or not. In PvP, all CC's have a maximum time of 12 seconds. (nerf)

Patch 2.2

-Fear (as well as all other CC's) will now have a maximum time of 10 seconds and be subject to Diminishing Returns in PvP (nerf)

Patch 2.3

- Fear Ward is now available to all priests at level 20. Duration reduced to 3 minutes, cooldown increased to 3 minutes.

Patch 3.1.0

The damage threshold for Fear, Psychic Scream, Hex, Intimidating Shout, and Turn Evil to break early has been significantly reduced. (nerf)

Patch 3.2.0

-Mana Burn—Fixed a bug where Mana Burn did not cause fear effects to break when the fear victim had an absorb shield on. (nerf)

Patch 4.0.3a

- Effects which are broken from taking too much damage (Fear, Frost Nova, Entangling Roots, etc.) now break automatically from about half as much damage taken as before. (nerf)

Patch 4.0.6

- Fear now has a PvP duration of 8 seconds.

- Seduction (Succubus) now has a PvP duration of 8 seconds.

Diminishing Returns!

Off of http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/basics/pvpcombat.html

Slowing Spells & Diminishing Returns

A handful of spells were added to the list of spells subject to diminishing returns in PvP. It is our goal to set as few spells as possible to be diminished. We've identified this short list of spells as having durations and cooldowns sufficient to almost permanently slow or immobilize targets but without adequate controls or other limiting factors. When a spell with diminishing returns is used against a target in PvP, the first effect has full duration. On the second use of the same category of spell (e.g. slowing), that spell's duration is reduced by 50%. On the third use, the duration is reduced by 75%. On the fourth attempt, the target becomes immune to the spell. Spells must be used on the same target within 15 seconds of the *end* of the duration in order to be diminished. In other words, if a target hasn't had a slowing spell active on them for more than 15 seconds, the next slowing spell will have full effect.

Welcome to the unofficial World of Warcraft Kalganism blog. The purpose is to resurrect people's ideas that got banned due to Kalganism, as deleting users isn't the way to win an argument. Many good posts got destroyed because of Kalganism, and this will become the new home for those posts. All posts, however, are presented in their original form, with any and all errors intact.

In addition to this, there will be new and exciting meaningless tripe!
